About Me!

Hey! My name is Devyn Cordero and welcome to my blog! I am currently 21 years old and a junior(?) at Rutgers. I put a question mark next to junior since I am technically supposed to be a senior but last year I had a quarter-life crisis and changed my major from bio to planning and public policy which set me back a bit.
So here's a little bit about my childhood! My parents, Noelle and Joseph, were extremely young when they had me (21 and 22 respectively) so like many young couples they broke up shortly after I was born. I never remember my parents being together and to be quite honest I am kind of thankful because my parents are SO different that I cannot even imagine them being together. My dad got married shortly after and would go on to have my sisters, Marilyn and Olivia, with my step-mom, Rose. My mom and step-dad, Devin, met when I was 6 and would later go on to get married and have my sister, Reilly, and brother, Nate. And yes, you read that right. Of all the names in the world, my mom married someone with the same name as me. You're probably wondering if my house ever gets confusing with us having the same name but surprisingly, it doesn't... after them being together for 15 years we have kind of figured out which Devy/in my mom is calling.
A word that comes to mind when asked to describe myself is indecisive. Whenever I have to make a decision with my friends or family, my answer is usually, "I don't care, whatever you guys want to do." I like to believe that I just have a laid-back and easy-going personality but my grandmother doesn't seem to like that answer. Whenever I go to visit my grandmother in Florida she forces me to to make decisions like what we are going to do or eat that day rather than letting her choose. Honestly though, most of the time I don't care! Or care enough to make a big stink about it. I'm not a person who likes conflict or letting people down so I would rather let someone else make a decision so the blame doesn't fall on me. When I type this out it seems wayyyyy worse, but trust me when it comes to big, important things I can make a decision!!!! Except for that time I decided on a college major and studied the subject for 2+ years before deciding I wanted to change, hahaha.
Having such young parents my grandparents were a huge part of my life and were always around to help. While I love all of my grandparents, I am not going to lie to you and say I don't have a favorite. My grandpa Jose, my dad's dad, is my favorite. Or was my favorite, I guess. He unfortunately passed away when I was in the 8th grade. When my dad was a kid, my grandfather was a Jersey City detective. While in pursuit of a suspect one night, my grandfather's gun went off in his holster, shooting through his hand and into his thigh. This incident unfortunately caused health issues that would plague my grandfather for the remainder of his life. Despite the countless hospital visit and surgical procedures, my grandpa always had the biggest smile in the room. He was always such a happy, well-liked person and I strive to be someone he would be proud of.
Grandpa Jose and I

This is an extremely rare photo of all my family dressed up. We also aren't big professional picture people so when we went to Turks and Caicos for my cousins wedding my mom insisted that we get nice pictures taken.

If you couldn't tell from the first day of class, I love my dog, Cooper (top), so obviously I had to include his picture. I included Annie's picture too because, well, she is freaking adorable. Both of our dogs are rescues so we guess that Annie is a rat-terrier but for Cooper we have no idea what kind of dog he is so if anyone has any guesses, let me know!

Soccer, MLS specifically, is huge in my house so I had to include a picture of one of my favorite soccer players, Luis Robles, and I. My parent's tell me that Luis and I look alike but I don't really see it.  There's actually somewhat of a funny story about the night this picture was taken. My step-dad and I have season tickets to the Red Bull's but my mom and I wanted to surprise my step-dad with club seats for his birthday. The night before the game my mom went in my step-dad's wallet and took out the season tickets cards that get you into the stadium and replaced them with the red credit card that comes in electronic monopoly so he would see the red and not think anything of it. The plan was we would get to the stadium and when he took out the monopoly card I would whip out the printed club seat tickets and surprise him but my sister had other plans. About five hours before the game, my sister broke out into huge, unexplained hives and my mom had to end up bringing her to the hospital when they wouldn't go away (my sister ended up being fine, for the record!) Of course my step-dad insisted we would skip the game and that's when my mom had to ruin the surprise and tell him she wanted him to go to the game because of the club tickets. And if you didn't know already, New York is RED

A photo my aunt snapped of my cousins and I on the beach in St. Augustine, Florida last summer. For her 65th birthday my grandmother rented out the condo above hers and requested my family and my aunt's family come stay there for two weeks. As much as I love my family, let's just say I was more than ready to go home at the end of the two weeks.

If you haven't hopped on the GoT band-wagon yet, I won't ruin it for you but boy do I love this show. Also, Cersei Lannister is an absolute bad-ass.

Try to tell me this picture of Annie and I isn't the best face swap you've ever seen!

  1. Dear Devyn,

The writing here is vivid and engaging and I am hooked. You've given me an excellent snapshot of your life--and that's not easy to do in a few words. The writing sings because there is a sense of honesty and humor here--having a fav grandparent, being indecisive (or are you?), and I also like that you gave us one clear story about your family (the Red Bull game), because it allows us to see how everyone behaves in vivid detail without having to explain it. Think about this choice in later assignment--specific scenes will always be more captivating then generalizations. I cannot pick between Cooper and Annie. I am indecisive too.
